Lake Peten Itza, Guatemala’s second largest lake, is a sparkling expanse at the heart of the hot, humid Petén Basin. This region was one of the earliest cradles of Mesoamerican civilization, with lush rain forests surrounding the lake and harboring some 27 archaeological sites. The ancient Mayan town of Flores, which was the last Mayan city to fall to the Spanish in 1697, serves as an ideal base for exploring the lake and its surroundings. Visitors can delve into the rich history and natural beauty of the area, discovering the remnants of a once-thriving civilization.
