Ponte Sant’Angelo, a marble pedestrian bridge spanning the Tiber River, connects Castel Sant’Angelo with the historic center of Rome. Built by Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 136 to access his mausoleum, the bridge is now lined with 10 monumental angel statues based on designs by Bernini. These statues, each carved from stone, add a striking visual element as visitors cross the river. Today, Ponte Sant’Angelo offers a scenic and historically rich approach to St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, allowing travelers to experience both the ancient and the artistic heritage of Rome.
