Located just off the coast of Key West, Sand Key Reef is a part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Dominating the landscape, a red, iron lighthouse built in 1853 stands as a historic sentinel over this protected area. The reef itself is shallow, with some sections lying just 1.5 meters (five feet) below the surface, making it an ideal spot for snorkelers of all skill levels to explore. Visitors can glide through the clear waters and observe the vibrant marine life and colorful coral formations up close.
