Metropolitan Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral, one of Fortaleza’s most distinctive landmarks, is the third largest cathedral in Brazil. Construction on this Gothic-Roman structure began in 1939 and spanned 40 years, finally concluding in 1979. Designed by French architect George Mounier, the cathedral draws inspiration from Germany’s Cologne Cathedral. Visitors can admire its imposing architecture, which stands as a testament to the city’s rich cultural and religious heritage. Today, the cathedral continues to be a focal point for both worship and architectural appreciation.
