Koh Tan (Koh Taen)

Koh Tan, also known as Koh Taen or Coral Island, is a small, tranquil island located just three miles and a 15-minute boat ride south of Koh Samui’s southern tip. Despite its proximity to a major tourist hub, the island offers a serene escape with its empty beaches and vehicle-free roads. Spanning only three square miles, Koh Tan is home to fewer than 30 residents who live a rustic lifestyle with limited electricity, providing a glimpse into traditional Thai island living. The island is renowned for its colorful hard and soft corals, making it a popular destination for snorkeling and kayaking excursions. Visitors can explore clear inshore waters, navigate mangrove swamps via a boardwalk, and visit a quaint local temple. A few local restaurants and bungalow-style accommodations are available, adding to the island’s charm.
