Built as a retirement residence for the Roman emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD, this massive fortress-like palace occupies about half of old town Split. Despite numerous changes over the centuries, the original quadrant design still stands, featuring four distinct gates: the Brass Gate, Iron Gate, Golden Gate, and Silver Gate. These gates enclose the walled fortress, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich history and architectural heritage. Today, walking through these ancient entrances, one can explore the well-preserved layout and imagine the grandeur of the palace in its prime.
