Hanging Temple (Xuankong Si)

Perched 165 feet (50 meters) above the ground on the cliffs of Mt. Hengshan in Shanxi Province, the Hanging Temple, also known as Xuankong Si, is a remarkable structure that dates back over 1,500 years. This unique temple is the only one in China dedicated to the three major religious traditions: Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Visitors can explore its precarious yet sturdy wooden structures, which are supported by beams embedded into the cliff face, and marvel at the intricate carvings and statues that reflect the harmonious coexistence of these faiths. The temple’s location offers not only a spiritual experience but also breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
