Carolinas Aviation Museum

The Carolinas Aviation Museum, located on the grounds of Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, offers a unique experience for aviation enthusiasts. Dedicated to the history of aviation in North and South Carolina, the museum houses a collection of 50 aircraft, including military and passenger planes, in a 40,000-square-foot hangar. Among the highlights is a reproduction of the Wright Brothers’ 1903 Wright Flyer, which was flown in nearby Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Visitors can explore a detailed exhibit dedicated to Captain Sully Sullenberger’s emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River. The museum also provides the chance to climb into the cockpit of a fighter jet and see the S.56B, one of only two single-engine biplane flying boats in the world. Note that the museum is currently closed for relocation, with plans to reopen in 2022.
