Niihau

Known as the Forbidden Island, Niʻihau is a privately owned island located just 17 miles off the coast of Kauai. This secluded haven remains largely untouched by outsiders, preserving a microcosm of Hawaiian history and culture. Home to fewer than 200 residents who speak Hawaiian and live without cars, electricity, or modern amenities, Niʻihau offers a glimpse into a traditional way of life. While non-residents are generally not allowed to visit, the island is a popular destination for off-shore snorkeling and diving, and flightseeing tours provide a unique aerial perspective of its pristine landscapes.
