Águas Livres Aqueduct

Constructed in 1744 to supply potable water to Lisbon, the Águas Livres Aqueduct stretches for 36 miles (58 kilometers) and remarkably withstood the city’s catastrophic 1755 earthquake. This impressive structure boasts 109 arches, with the tallest reaching an imposing height of 213 feet (65 meters). In Lisbon’s Campolide neighborhood, visitors can walk across a section of these arches, experiencing the aqueduct’s grandeur and engineering up close.
