Rising to a height of 3,792 feet (1,156 meters) over the hinterlands north-west of Byron Bay, Wollumbin (Mount Warning) is the region’s highest peak and the first area of the Australian mainland to catch the sunrise. Named by Captain James Cook to alert seafarers of the coastal reefs at Point Danger, the mountain holds significant cultural value for the indigenous Bundjalung people. Hikers are drawn to the 5.6-mile (9 km) round-trip trail, which takes about four hours, winding through subtropical rainforest and offering panoramic views of the coast and Wollumbin National Park. Today, visitors can experience the natural beauty and rich heritage of this iconic landmark.
