White Island (Whakaari)

White Island, also known as Whakaari, is an active volcanic island located in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty. Believed to have been continuously erupting for 150,000 years, it stands as the country’s most active volcano. The island’s rugged and dynamic landscape, marked by steaming vents and volcanic activity, can now be best observed from above. Following the 2019 eruption, guided walking tours are no longer available, but visitors can still experience the raw power of the volcano by circling the steaming vent via helicopter.
