Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial

The Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial, located off San Souci beach on Oahu, was inaugurated in 1927 as a shimmering seaside tribute to the 10,000 Hawaii service members who served in World War I. This unique ‘living memorial’ featured a 100m saltwater swimming pool and stone bleachers, serving both as a place of honor and a public facility where locals learned to swim. The Natatorium played a significant role in fostering a swimming culture in the community and provided a practice spot for Olympians, including the legendary Duke Kahanamoku. Today, the abandoned and crumbling venue, shuttered since 1979, still hosts occasional commemorative ceremonies on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. Visitors can peek through the bars of its towering front gate and imagine the vibrant past of this once-thriving landmark.
