Ushijima Shrine

Ushijima Shrine, established in the ninth century, stands as one of Tokyo’s oldest surviving shrines. Named after the ox, a symbol of strength in Japanese culture, it has withstood major earthquakes and the ravages of war. Located on the east bank of the Sumida River, the shrine is believed to protect the local residents, much like the more famous Senso-ji Temple does on the west bank. Visitors today can explore this historic site, which offers a glimpse into the enduring spiritual and cultural heritage of the area.
