Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine (Namugongo)

The Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine in Namugongo, Kampala, honors the 32 Ugandan Christians, known as the Martyrs of Uganda, who were executed in 1886 by Mwanga II, the kabaka, or king, of the Buganda kingdom. Construction of the Roman Catholic basilica and shrine began in 1965, shortly after Pope Paul VI canonized the martyrs. Today, the site attracts thousands of visitors, both Christian and non-Christian, who come to pay their respects and explore the historical and spiritual significance of this place.
