Udawalawe National Park

Established in 1972, Udawalawe National Park in southern Sri Lanka was created to provide a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. Spanning 119 square miles (308 square kilometers), this expansive reserve is the island’s sixth-largest. Visitors can explore its diverse landscapes, where they might spot a variety of animals, including elephants, buffalo, deer, crocodiles, and leopards, as well as a rich array of birdlife.
