Founded centuries before Tikal, the ancient Mayan city of Uaxactún is home to the oldest arch in the Mayan world and is believed to be the birthplace of the Mayan calendar and writing system. Located in Guatemala near Flores, the site features a mix of modern houses and ancient ruins, including pyramids and temples. These structures were meticulously positioned by the Maya to observe the seasonal movements of planets and stars. Visitors today can explore these historical remnants and gain insight into the advanced astronomical knowledge of the ancient Maya.
