Theatre of Dionysus

Set on the southern slope of Athens’ ancient Acropolis citadel, the Theatre of Dionysus is where the world was first introduced to drama. Established in the sixth century BC and dedicated to Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry, the theater hosted the earliest Greek dramas as part of his festival. Rebuilt in stone a couple of centuries later, the ruins that remain today offer a glimpse into its historical significance. Visitors can explore these remnants and imagine the vibrant performances and festivals that once filled this hallowed ground.
