Stradun (Placa)

The Stradun, also known as Placa, stretches from the Pile Gate at Old Town’s western entrance to the harbor in the east. Originally a shallow sea channel that separated the small island of Dubrovnik from the mainland Republic of Ragusa, it was filled in during the 12th century to create the main street of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Today, visitors can walk along this historic thoroughfare, flanked by rows of stone buildings with distinctive red-tiled roofs, and experience the vibrant heart of the city.
