Sardis, or Sardes, located just east of Izmir in Turkey, was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia. Over the centuries, it has been under the rule of Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, leaving a rich tapestry of historical layers. The site’s ruins include a Roman gymnasium, the remnants of a nearby Greek temple, and the remains of the fifth church mentioned in the Bible’s Seven Churches of the Revelation. Today, visitors can explore these diverse structures, each offering a glimpse into the various civilizations that once thrived here.
