San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Connected to the Basque coast by a narrow stone bridge and a winding staircase, the small islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe rises dramatically from the sea, resembling a castle. At its peak, a small hermitage with a modest monastery and chapel stands, offering visitors a unique blend of history and spirituality. The journey to the top involves navigating the 241 steps, each step revealing more of the rugged coastline and azure waters. A long-standing tradition invites visitors to ring the hermitage bell three times, believed to bring good luck and ward off evil.
