Pedra da Gavea, a striking granite peak rising 2,769 feet (844 meters) above sea level, was named by Portuguese sailors in January 1502, who saw its shape and thought it resembled the topsail of a ship. Located within Tijuca National Park, the mountain’s summit offers panoramic views, while its sheer cliffs plummet almost directly down toward the sea. Visitors today can hike the challenging trail to the top, experiencing the dense forest and unique rock formations along the way.
