In the early 14th century, Emperor Hanazono of Japan abdicated his throne to become a monk, transforming his palace into the Myoshin-ji Temple. Located in Kyoto, this expansive complex includes a main temple and 50 sub-temples. Although nearly all the original structures were destroyed during a 15th-century war, they were meticulously rebuilt over the next 150 years. Today, visitors can explore the reconstructions, which stand as a testament to the temple’s enduring legacy and historical significance.
