Nestled in the lush surroundings of Rio de Janeiro, the Moreira Salles Institute (Instituto Moreira Salles) is a cultural legacy from one of Brazil’s elite families. This modernist mansion, originally the home of the Moreira Salles family, now serves as a museum and educational space dedicated to Brazilian culture and arts. The institute focuses on four artistic areas: photography, music, literature, and iconography, with a primary emphasis on photography. Rotating exhibits showcase the works of top visual artists, ranging from historic photos to contemporary photo-essays and abstract photography. The building, a prime example of 1950s South American modernism, features angular designs and geometric patterns, with semi-open air rooms and floor-to-ceiling windows that integrate the natural beauty of the Tijuca National Forest. The surrounding garden, with its towering trees, winding paths, and serene water features, complements the tranquil and modern ambiance.
