Set in the hills above Petra, the Monastery, also known as Ad Deir or al-Deir, is one of the ancient city’s most recognizable monuments after the Treasury. Carved out of sandstone during the 3rd century BC, it was originally built as a Nabatean tomb. The name ‘Monastery’ comes from the crosses etched into its walls during Byzantine times. Standing 148 feet (45 meters) high, this impressive structure offers visitors a glimpse into the rich historical and cultural layers of Petra. Today, travelers can explore the site, marveling at the intricate carvings and the sheer scale of the monument.
