Chiseled into the rocks on the edge of Lake Taupo in the late 1970s, the Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings stand over 33 feet (10 meters) high. Master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell created these mammoth sculptures, which depict Ngatoroirangi, a significant figure believed to have guided the Te Arawa tribes from their Polynesian homeland to New Zealand. Visitors can admire the intricate details and scale of the carvings, set against the serene backdrop of the lake, offering a unique cultural and historical experience.
