Middleton Place

Middleton Place, a 65-acre former rice plantation along the Ashley River, was built in 1755 by the father of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. This National Historic Landmark invites visitors to explore its historic house, meticulously landscaped gardens, and stable yards. In the stable yards, staff dressed in period clothing bring the past to life through demonstrations of traditional crafts such as weaving, blacksmithing, and carpentry. The site offers a tangible connection to the region’s colonial history and the skills that sustained it.
