Maeshowe Chambered Cairn, located in northern Scotland near Kirkwall, is an ancient Neolithic tomb over 5,000 years old. This subterranean structure is renowned for its sophisticated design and meticulous stonework, featuring massive individual stones that have stood the test of time. The cairn was sealed for millennia until Norsemen broke in around 1200 AD, leaving behind a wealth of runic inscriptions on the walls, making it one of the largest collections of such carvings outside Scandinavia. Today, visitors can explore the chamber and see these historical markings, offering a unique glimpse into both Neolithic and Viking history.
