Katla Volcano

Katla Volcano, standing at 4,960 feet (1,511 meters) high, is Iceland’s largest and one of its most active and powerful volcanoes. With 20 eruptions since the year 1100, Katla has a significant impact on the landscape, as evidenced by its last eruption, which extended Iceland’s coastline by three miles (four kilometers). Despite its frequent activity, much of Katla remains covered by ice, creating a striking contrast between the fiery forces beneath and the icy surface above. Visitors can explore the surrounding area, witnessing the raw, rugged beauty and the geological history that has shaped this unique part of Iceland.
