Iziko Museums Slave Lodge

The Iziko Museums Slave Lodge, situated in Cape Town, South Africa, occupies a building that once belonged to the Dutch East India Company. From 1679 to 1811, this structure housed hundreds of slaves who labored in the nearby Company’s Gardens and awaited auction on Spin Street. The harsh conditions within these walls led to the death of as many as 20 percent of the enslaved individuals.
