Built in 1883, the House of Wonders, or Beit-al-Ajaib, stands as the largest and tallest building in Stone Town, Tanzania. This historic palace was the first on the island to have electricity and a working elevator. Since the early 2000s, it has housed the Museum of History and Culture, featuring a permanent collection of Swahili and Zanzibari artifacts. Visitors can explore the grounds, which include a traditional Swahili boat, old-world fishing tools, and famous ships. Inside, the halls offer an up-close look at traditional garments, historic portraits of royalty, and ancient furniture from former sultans’ homes. A visit here provides a window into the local culture and the island’s rich history.
