Hells of Beppu

The Hells of Beppu, a designated Place of Scenic Beauty, stands as one of Japan’s most captivating natural wonders. Located in the onsen town of Beppu, these ‘hells’ (jigoku) consist of seven bubbling hot springs, each with temperatures exceeding 212°F (100°C). The springs, with their steaming, mineral-rich waters, offer a dramatic and otherworldly landscape. Visitors can explore the area, marveling at the vibrant colors and textures of the geothermal activity, though the extreme heat means that only the views, not the water, are for soaking in.
