Hell’s Gate National Park, the inspiration behind Disney’s The Lion King, spans approximately 26 square miles (68.25 square kilometers) in Kenya, near Nairobi. Named for a distinctive gap in the red-tinged cliffs, this natural wonder was sculpted by the ancient waters of a prehistoric lake. Unlike other parks in East Africa, Hell’s Gate allows visitors to leave their vehicles and explore on foot. Hiking through the park, you can experience the rugged terrain up close, with its dramatic rock formations and scenic landscapes.
