Harbor Museum (Hafenmuseum Hamburg)

The Harbor Museum (Hafenmuseum Hamburg) is housed in one of the last remaining wooden quai sheds, number 50A, in the historical part of the free port, which was built over a century ago. Despite the profound changes brought by container shipping, the museum has preserved the rich history and operations of the Hamburg harbor. Spanning 2,500 square meters, the museum covers topics from cargo handling and shipbuilding to marine engineering. Outside, visitors can see heavy machinery, including a floating crane, a steam-powered suction machine, a barge, and a mooring car. The museum’s location in the bustling heart of the modern harbor adds to its authenticity. Every weekend, former harbor workers and ship experts share their firsthand knowledge, providing insights into the inner workings of the port.
