French Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau, without any family to inherit his work, bequeathed his estate and all the artwork within it to the state of France. Located at the foot of Montmartre in the 9th arrondissement, the Gustave Moreau Museum is a treasure trove filled with Moreau’s paintings and personal effects. The museum’s rooms, stuffed to the rafters with his creations, provide a vivid glimpse into the artist’s life during the 19th century. Visitors can explore the detailed and often fantastical works that defined Moreau’s career, surrounded by the very environment where he lived and worked.
