Grotte del Passetto

Nestled along the coastal cliffs of Ancona, the Grotte del Passetto is a historic and unique site. Over a century ago, local fishers carved hundreds of caves into the rock, creating a network of grottos that served as mooring spots for their boats and storage for fishing gear. Today, these caves, known as grottini, are still used by the descendants of the original builders, called grottaroli, who transform them into summertime retreats for relaxation and dining by the water. Visitors can explore this fascinating waterfront warren and experience a slice of Ancona’s maritime heritage.
