Fort St. George

Constructed in 1640 by the British East India Company, Fort St. George stands as their first fortress in India, located in Chennai. The fort’s 20-foot (6-meter) thick outer walls enclose a complex of white colonial buildings, once known as the ‘White City.’ Among these structures is St. Mary’s, the oldest Anglican church in Asia. Today, visitors can explore the historic grounds, walk along the imposing walls, and step inside the church to experience a piece of colonial history.
