Fort Margherita

Completed in 1879, Fort Margherita stands as a whitewashed and turreted fortress on the banks of the Sarawak River in Kuching. Commissioned by Charles Brooke, the second Rajah of Sarawak, the fort was built to defend the city from river pirates, a frequent threat in the 19th century. Today, visitors can explore the fort’s historical significance through the Brooke Gallery, which details the influence of the White Rajas on Sarawak.
