Fort Denison

Fort Denison, located northeast of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, has a storied past as a defense facility and site of severe punishments for convicted felons. The recently restored island now offers visitors a chance to explore its historical grounds, including the gibbet where criminals were hanged. The fort, designed to protect the island from invaders, features the historic Martello Tower, the only one of its kind in Australia. An informative museum and various landmarks provide insight into the island’s dark and violent history. Currently, Fort Denison is closed for maintenance, with plans to reopen in late 2021.
