Built by the Dutch in 1631, Fort Amsterdam stands on a peninsula on the western side of Great Bay, once serving as a crucial vantage point in the colonial disputes between the Dutch, French, and British. Today, the fort is decommissioned, but visitors can still explore its ruins and see 19th-century cannons that evoke its historical significance. The site also serves as a sanctuary for nesting pelicans, adding a touch of natural beauty to the historic setting.
