The Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, known as Kaigungo, is a somber reminder of the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. Located in Tomigusuku, Japan, this site marks where thousands of Japanese soldiers met their end, either by suicide or in combat. Reopened by Okinawans to highlight the futility of war and to advocate for peace, the headquarters now allows visitors to explore some of the tunnels, which were painstakingly carved with pickaxes. Museum exhibits provide a detailed account of the site’s history, offering a poignant and educational experience.
