Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle, also known as St. George’s Castle, stands as the oldest surviving European building in sub-Saharan Africa, located on the coast of Ghana. Built by the Portuguese in the late 15th century, the castle’s imposing stone walls and bastions overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Its historical significance is deeply tied to the transatlantic slave trade, where thousands of enslaved people were held in its dungeons before being forcibly shipped to the Americas. Today, visitors can tour the castle, explore the dark, cramped dungeons, and visit a small museum that provides insight into the harrowing history of the slave trade.
