Elizabeth Fort

Elizabeth Fort, built by the British in 1601 and expanded to its current star-shaped form in the 1620s, has been a silent observer of Cork’s tumultuous history. Originally a military barracks, the fort later served as a police station until 2014 when the city began transforming it into a tourist attraction. Visitors today can explore the historic site, walking along the ramparts and through the interior, gaining insight into the fort’s varied roles over the centuries.
