El Pilar Mayan Ruins

El Pilar, an ancient Mayan city located at Belize’s border with Guatemala, dates back to the Middle Preclassic and Late-Classic periods. Currently under excavation by the University of California, the site is thought to encompass over 50 acres, featuring 20 or more plazas and hundreds of other structures. Visitors can explore several easily navigable trails, weaving through the dense forest and uncovering the layers of this once-thriving urban center.
