El Caracol (Zona Arqueológica El Caracol)

El Caracol, meaning ‘snail’ in Spanish, is a small Mayan temple located within Cozumel’s Punta Sur Eco Beach Park. The name and the snail sculptures that once adorned its dome are not derived from a mythical giant conch shell, as some believe, but rather from the rows of real snails embedded in the stucco. This unique architectural feature sets El Caracol apart, offering visitors a glimpse into the intricate and symbolic construction techniques of the ancient Maya. Today, guests can explore the ruins and appreciate the historical and cultural significance of this site.
