Drum Tower (Gulou)

Xian’s Drum Tower, or Gulou, was constructed during the Ming Dynasty and stands across from the equally ancient Bell Tower in the heart of the Old City. Originally designed to keep time, the tower’s drums were beaten each evening to signal sunset, while the adjacent Bell Tower marked sunrise with the tolling of bells. Today, visitors can explore the historic structure, which offers a glimpse into the city’s past and its traditional timekeeping methods. The tower’s architecture and historical significance provide a tangible link to Xian’s rich heritage.
