Designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel, the architect behind the Eiffel Tower, the Ponte de Dom Luis I played a pivotal role in Porto’s economic development when it was constructed. Before its completion, the only means to cross the Douro River were boats lashed together. Spanning the river, the bridge connects Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, offering visitors a pedestrian walkway with panoramic views of the Douro River and the historic Ribeira District. Today, it stands as Porto’s most iconic landmark, inviting travelers to experience the city’s rich history and scenic beauty.
