Diocletian’s Palace

Built in the fourth century as a retirement complex for the Roman Emperor Diocletian, this vast, fortress-like compound still dominates Split Old Town. After its abandonment in the sixth century, locals repurposed the space, and today, the 220 Roman-era buildings within the palace boundaries house a vibrant mix of homes, shops, bars, and other businesses. Visitors can explore the ancient stone walls and walk through narrow, cobbled streets, experiencing a unique blend of history and modern life.
