Chisos Mountains

The Chisos Mountains, considered the heart of Big Bend National Park, stretch for about 20 miles from Punta de la Sierra to Panther Junction, where the park’s visitor center is located. Unlike the surrounding arid landscapes, these mountains are forested with ponderosa pines and other hardy trees, creating a unique and contrasting environment. As the only mountain range entirely within a single US national park, the Chisos offer visitors a chance to explore diverse ecosystems, from the cool, shaded forests to the rugged, rocky peaks. Hiking trails wind through the area, providing opportunities to experience the natural beauty and varied terrain.
