During the Middle Ages, a network of canals was constructed through Bologna’s city center, with the Canale delle Moline, or ‘Canal of the Mills,’ playing a crucial role in powering the city’s watermills, weaving silk, and grinding grain for local bakeries. Today, while many of these canals have been covered or lost to time, a small portion of the Canale delle Moline remains visible. Visitors can catch a glimpse of this historic waterway from a tiny viewpoint along Via Piella, offering a tangible connection to Bologna’s medieval past.
